Czech Republic: Trading firm Second Foundation to commission 307MW of BESS in 2026, local integrator used

In brief

Czech energy trading company Second Foundation is building three grid-scale battery energy storage projects in the Czech Republic with a combined capacity of 307MW, all targeting commissioning in 2026. The projects are Tušimice at 200MW/400MWh, Stonava at 87MW/180MWh, and Vraňany at 20MW/40MWh, backed by a total investment of about CZK4 billion (€164 million / $191 million). The battery technology is being supplied by Czech manufacturer Gaz Energy, while Second Foundation plans to optimize the assets in-house through its subsidiary Nano Energies. The article highlights Tušimice as the largest project, with a later expansion planned to 210MW/420MWh, and notes that it will connect directly to the ČEPS transmission system through what is described as the Czech Republic’s first privately owned substation.

The article also presents the projects as a sign that the Czech storage market is moving from proposals into real construction. Stonava, located in the Moravian-Silesian region, is expected to become the country’s largest battery project when it comes online in late summer, before Tušimice, while Vraňany sits next to the earlier Energy Nest gas-plus-battery site in the Mělník district. All three projects are intended to provide the full range of ancillary services, entering a Czech ancillary-services market of roughly 1GW, including 300MW of aFRR and 70MW of FCR, which are especially relevant for batteries. The article stresses that Second Foundation sees long-term value not only in these service markets but also in algorithmic trading and operational control, with Gaz Energy’s systems using proprietary EMS and BMS software developed directly by Second Foundation.
